A/C blowing warm air
General info, not professional advice. These are common causes that apply to most cars, not a diagnosis of yours. If you are unsure or a problem affects brakes, steering, airbags or fuel, see a qualified mechanic.
Likely causes (most common first)
- Low refrigerant from a leak
It cools a little or not at all over time.
๐ Find a used ac compressor - A/C compressor clutch not engaging
The center of the compressor pulley doesn't spin with the A/C on.
๐ Find a used ac compressor - Blown fuse or relay
Nothing happens when you press the A/C button.
๐ Find a used ac relay - Blocked or damaged condenser
Debris in front of the radiator, or poor cooling at idle.
๐ Find a used ac condenser - Cooling fan not running
It cools on the highway but gets warm at idle.
๐ Find a used radiator fan
Quick safe checks
- With the engine running and A/C on max, see whether the compressor clutch center turns. Stay clear of belts.
- Check the A/C fuses and relays using the owner's manual diagram.
- Clear leaves and bugs from in front of the condenser, gently.
Safety first
- โ ๏ธ Keep hands, hair and loose clothing away from belts and the cooling fan. The fan can turn on even with the engine off.
When to see a pro
The system needs refrigerant work. Federal rules require certified technicians to handle refrigerant, and it shouldn't be vented to the air.
