How to Pull A Battery at a Junkyard: Tools & Tips

General guidance, not instructions for your exact car. Bolt sizes, steps and tools vary by year, make and model. Watch a video for your exact vehicle and follow the yard's safety rules.

Tools to bring

10mm and 13mm wrenches or sockets (common sizes), gloves, eye protection, a sturdy bag or carrier.

Typical steps

  1. Many yards remove batteries when a car arrives, or sell them separately. Call ahead.
  2. Always disconnect the negative (−) terminal first, then the positive (+).
  3. Remove the hold-down clamp or bracket.
  4. Lift the battery straight up, keeping it level. Batteries contain acid and are heavy.

Before you pay

Look for a date sticker, bulging sides or leaks. A parts store can test a battery for you. Expect a core charge at some yards.
