How to Pull A Radiator at a Junkyard: Tools & Tips

General guidance, not instructions for your exact car. Bolt sizes, steps and tools vary by year, make and model. Watch a video for your exact vehicle and follow the yard's safety rules.

Tools to bring

Sockets 8–13mm, screwdrivers, pliers for hose clamps, a drain pan or bucket, rags, gloves, eye protection.

Typical steps

  1. Expect leftover coolant. It's toxic to pets and wildlife, so catch it and follow the yard's fluid rules.
  2. Remove the upper and lower hoses (loosen clamps, twist hoses off).
  3. Unclip the fan shroud and any electric fan connectors; on many cars the fan comes out with the radiator.
  4. If the car has an automatic transmission, there may be cooler lines on the radiator. Be ready for fluid.
  5. Remove the top brackets and lift the radiator straight up. The fins bend easily, so hold it by the tanks.

Before you pay

Look for green or white crust (old leaks), cracked plastic tanks and crushed fins. A pressure test at home before installing is a good idea.
