How to Pull An AC Compressor at a Junkyard: Tools & Tips

General guidance, not instructions for your exact car. Bolt sizes, steps and tools vary by year, make and model. Watch a video for your exact vehicle and follow the yard's safety rules.

Tools to bring

Sockets 10–17mm with extensions, breaker bar or belt tool, gloves, eye protection.

Typical steps

  1. Don't open an AC line that might still hold refrigerant. Releasing refrigerant is against federal rules and can injure you. Many yards recover it when cars arrive, but ask staff first.
  2. Release the belt tensioner and slip the serpentine belt off.
  3. Unplug the clutch connector and remove the lines from the compressor (only once you're sure the system is empty). Cap the ports with tape so dirt doesn't get in.
  4. Remove the mounting bolts and lift the compressor out.

Before you pay

Spin the clutch plate by hand; the inner shaft should turn smoothly. Most installers recommend replacing the receiver/drier or accumulator and having the system vacuumed and recharged by a shop.
