How to Pull A Door at a Junkyard: Tools & Tips

General guidance, not instructions for your exact car. Bolt sizes, steps and tools vary by year, make and model. Watch a video for your exact vehicle and follow the yard's safety rules.

Tools to bring

Sockets 10–14mm with extensions, Torx bits (common on hinge bolts), trim tool, a helper. Doors are heavy and awkward.

Typical steps

  1. Decide whether you want the whole door ("shell with glass" or complete). Removing only the outer skin isn't practical.
  2. Remove the rubber boot between the door and body and unplug the wiring harness, or cut it only if the yard allows and you don't need it.
  3. Remove the door check strap bolt.
  4. With a helper holding the door, remove the hinge bolts (or the hinge-to-body bolts). Lift it off carefully.

Before you pay

Check for rust along the bottom edge, dents, and the color/paint code if you want a match. Ask the yard how doors are priced, since some price complete doors differently from shells.
